San Lucar Horse Races
Fernando Savater said in the blog Stories of turf that “For horseracing I do not apply any science and philosophy alone. Only the heart, as Shakespeare did in his “Love’s Labours Lost””
In La Antigua we are people who have a lot of heart and, therefore, we will participate in the presentation of the races of Sanlucar de Barrameda 2016, which will be held next May 27 in Guijuelo, on the facilities of Julian Martin, along with the Company who manages the races, Bodegas Barbadillo, the House of Alba and the town hall of Guijuelo.
And why will we be there? We will be there because the traditional way is one of the features of both our sheep cheeses and our work ethic. This prints a beauty that is difficoult to explain. And these horse races have both beauty and tradition. Its origin can be found in informal competitions they were done by the owners of horses that were used to transport fish from the old port of Bajo de Guía to local markets and nearby towns. These races were not regulated until 31st August 1845 and, although the first race in a standard way in Spain were in of Alameda de Osuna, 1835, these disappeared leaving the Sanlúcar ones as the oldest of those currently held in our country. Moreover, they have in the first statutes of the company that manages something we love because one of the objectives was to promote “bloodstock Andalusian, whose interesting branch, is known for its utility for agriculture in this country.”
Agriculture, livestock Spanish … Does it sound right? We have never denied that we are proud of our origins: grazing, sheep farming in our country … It all comes together and everything is a circle. And we could not help but be in a race with as much heart as our cheeses.
You can follow the development of the day on May 27, which will be discussed in detail in a few days, through our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram with hastahg #LaAntiguaSanlúcar. There will be interviews, direct, photographs, stories, anecdotes and so much, so much Spanish heart …
